LOS ANGELES, CA-  When the press release for “Goodbye Goodmorning” landed in my inbox and I hit play, I was not expecting to be pulled in that quickly. But from the opening bars, Leigh-Anne had me.

There is something immediately arresting about the sonics. The track feels like a modern power ballad, but it is not weighed down by melodrama. Instead, it is anchored by a strong, controlled vocal that carries both desire and frustration in equal measure. The chorus hook, built around the line “Goodbye turns into Good morning, love,” is deceptively clever. It captures that volatile cycle of breaking up and making up with a simplicity that lingers long after the song ends.

This was my introduction to Leigh-Anne as a solo artist. After one listen, I went straight into the rest of My Ego Told Me To. What surprised me most was how seamlessly reggae and roots influences run beneath the album’s pop framework. The Caribbean textures are not decorative. They are foundational. They give the record warmth, rhythm, and a sense of identity that feels lived in rather than curated.

For listeners who only encounter “Goodbye Goodmorning” first, the broader palette of the album might come as a surprise. Take “Revival,” for example. Its instrumentation carries unmistakable echoes of Sister Nancy era dancehall energy. If you shuffled those two tracks back to back without context, you might reasonably ask whether they are even from the same artist.

But that range is precisely what makes the album compelling. Leigh-Anne moves between sultry R&B, reggae-rooted grooves, and polished pop without sounding scattered. Instead, the contrast feels intentional. “Goodbye Goodmorning” draws you in with familiarity. “Revival” pushes you into something more rhythmically daring. Together, they sketch out the edges of a well-rounded sonic identity.

There is space for an artist like this right now. Someone who is not flattening their influences into a single lane, but allowing them to coexist. If you give the record the time it asks for, chances are you may find yourself pleasantly surprised. I know I was.
