If you know music … especially hip-hop … then you should know Karriem Riggin. A producer and drummer who has left his indelible musical marks on a handful of Common’s albums (including Common’s most recent release “Black America Again), Erykah Badu’s “New Amerykah” parts one and two, Slum Village albums, J Dilla albums, Kanye’s “The Life of Pablo” and even a pair of Diana Krall albums, odds are you’ve heard him playing or producing, but you just didn’t know it.
At Stones Throw Fest, he spent about 30 minutes spinning records. He was pulling double duty as he would later play drums (and rap) with Common later on in the evening, but his time behind the turntables gave the audience a chance to hear the music that inspires and motivates him. I hope that the audience was paying attention, because Karriem is gearing up to release a new album in 2017, tentatively-titled The Headnod Suite.
If it’s anything like is double album “Alone / Together”, which was release din 2012, it will showcased that musical genius that draws other high caliber artists to him to collaborate.
Earlier this week, Stones Throw dropped a teaser of a new instrumental title “Bahia Dreamin.” Let these sonics sink in and get excited for whats to come.
