AUSTIN, TX- Death and Vanilla is a Swedish band that formed in Malmö in 2009. The band consists of Marleen Nilsson (vocals, organ), Anders Hansson (guitar, bass, keyboards), and Magnus Bodin (drums, percussion). Their music is characterized by a dreamy and atmospheric sound that draws inspiration from various genres such as psychedelic rock, shoegaze, and electronic music. They often use vintage instruments and recording techniques to create a nostalgic and otherworldly atmosphere.
Since their formation, Death and Vanilla has released several albums and EPs, including their self-titled debut album in 2012, “To Where the Wild Things Are” in 2015, and “Are You a Dreamer?” in 2019. They have also performed live extensively in Europe and North America. Death and Vanilla’s music has received critical acclaim for its unique and evocative sound, and they have been praised for their ability to blend different genres and create something entirely their own. Their music has been described as both haunting and beautiful, and it often explores themes of nostalgia, memory, and the passage of time.
The Malmö based trio brought their Mellotron and Optigan-driven songs to East 6th Street’s Liberty as part of their first visit to the US. Over the course of 6 acclaimed albums, D&V have become far less Delia Derbyshire-redolent, diving headfirst into a multitude of genres and eras. Despite operating in the spartan setting of The Liberty, the group acquitted themselves nicely and when all is said and written, will likely be considered far more than the sum of their disparate influences (more likely you’ll be seeing their name dropped in someone else’s SXSW review in the years to come).
