AUSTIN, TX- Austin’s Elysium was transformed into a vibrant hub of Japanese musical culture for this year’s Tokyo Calling showcase at SXSW. Amidst a lineup of eclectic talent, HALLEY stood out with their groove-infused R&B, delivering a performance that was as musically solid as it was promising.
Formed in Tokyo, HALLEY has been making waves in the Japanese music scene with their distinctive blend of R&B and soul. Their full band setup is a refreshing departure from the typical reliance on electronic backing tracks, bringing an authentic and organic feel to their live performances. The band’s journey started with a shared passion for classic R&B and soul, drawing inspiration from legends like Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and contemporary influences such as Mint Condition.
As someone who grew up immersed in the rich, soulful sounds of Mint Condition, my standards for R&B bands are notoriously high. HALLEY, however, managed to capture my attention and respect with their musical chops and infectious grooves. Their sound is solid, showcasing a level of musicianship that promises great potential.
The lead singer’s voice is a key element of their appeal, bringing a raw and emotional depth to their music. Yet, there’s a noticeable struggle with English enunciation, which sometimes felt forced and detracted from the overall performance. Interestingly, the songs performed entirely in Japanese felt more natural and genuine. Even without understanding the lyrics, the emotive power and fluidity of the music shone through, creating a more immersive and enjoyable experience. This suggests that HALLEY might benefit from integrating more of their native language into their English songs, much like the global phenomenon of K-Pop, which has seamlessly blended Korean and English to captivate international audiences.
The band’s set at Elysium was a testament to their potential. They navigated through a series of well-crafted songs, each filled with rich harmonies, tight rhythms, and a sense of cohesion often missing in fledgling bands. The whole band arrangement, solid rhythm section, lush keys, and smooth guitar lines provided a robust foundation for the lead singer’s emotive delivery. HALLEY’s performance hinted at the expansive sonic landscapes they could explore. There’s room for growth, particularly in how they could fuse traditional R&B elements with their unique cultural influences. Adding more Japanese lyrics in the English lyrics songs could help with the lead singer’s enunciation issues and set them apart in a crowded genre, offering a fresh and authentic take on R&B that resonates on a deeper level.
In a landscape where musical authenticity and cultural representation are increasingly valued, HALLEY has the potential to carve out a unique niche. Their performance at SXSW was a glimpse into what they can offer—a serviceable yet promising act with the chops to grow into something truly special. For now, HALLEY remains a band to watch. Their performance at Elysium left the audience grooving and intrigued, a sign of good things to come. As they continue to refine their sound and embrace their bilingual potential, there’s no doubt they’ll capture even more hearts both in Japan and beyond.
