AUSTIN, TX- Despite stumbling in a tad late to their gig at Swan Dive during SXSW, I was instantly swept up in the cyclone of energy that is The Frost Children. This sibling duo, Angel and Lulu Prost, with their kinetic performances and malleable musical style, are clearly shaping up to become the music industry’s wild cards.
With roots in the tumultuous year of 2020, The Frost Children started as a ripple in their local scene before burgeoning into a wave that’s starting to crest. Their breakthrough arrived in 2021 with “Elixir Rejection,” a debut EP that showcases a volatile fusion of hyperpop, punk rock, electro punk, and screamo. The Prosts didn’t rest on their laurels; instead, they continued to expand their musical horizon, most notably with their 2022 full-length album “Spiral”.
On stage at the Swan Dive, the duo exhibited an explosive cocktail of distinctive sound and charismatic presence. The atmosphere was electrified, a perfect fit for the club scene’s adrenaline-infused underbelly. As mini-mosh pits spontaneously formed and disbanded around me, the fervor of the crowd felt as captivating as the performance itself.
While I might have been a bit older than the average fan in the room, the infectious enthusiasm of the crowd transcended age. The entire experience was a window into Angel and Lulu’s daring artistry, as they gambled with musical and visual boundaries. Unconventional? Absolutely. Authentic? Undeniably. As the final note rang out, I found myself wholly ready to endorse whatever The Frost Children have up their sleeves next.
