LUCK, TX- For most of our SXSW and Luck Reunion artist coverage, we’ll keep it relatively short and sweet. We have over 80 artists to cover, so cut us some slack! 😉 We’ll basically be formatting each post into two parts: (1) Why our contributor wanted to see this act and (2) what our contributor thought of the performance”. Easy peasy. If you want to learn more about the act, make sure you click through to their social media links to get in the know. You won’t be disappointed!

Why I Wanted To See Ezra Furman: I’ve been meaning to see Ezra Furman live in concerts in 2011 when I purchased his album with the Harpoons “Mysterious Power”, but for one reason or another I was just never able to head out to see him play. Hell … he even played Los Angeles in October last year and I had no idea (stupid Facebook algorithms!). When I saw his name on the roster for Luck Reunion, I’m not gonna to lie … I got a little excited. With a new album in tow, the fantastically ambitious “Transangelic Exodus”, I’d finally get the chance to see him perform live.
What I Thought Of Ezra Furman’s Performance: I’ve got to admit that I was a little surprised that Luck Reunion booked Ezra for a set. After all, a majority of the line-up were country/folk artists, that were perhaps a bit more “traditional” when it came to music. Don’t get me wrong, Ezra’s got some fantastic folk/folk rock in his repertoire, but have your heard “Transangelic Exodus”? It’s more punk than folk. I kinda doubt that you’d ever see, let’s say, Kevin Morby and Ezra on the same bill touring together, right? Just sayin’.
But I absolutely loved the booking.
When Ezra took the stage wearing a floral dress, red polka-dotted blazer and dangly pearl necklace which violently swung from his neck when he got lost in the music, I immediately noted his being giving a certain kind of life to the atmosphere under the tent. It was fearless and unapologetic, just like the music he played for his 40 minute set.
As expected, the music he performed came primarily from his latest album, and as expected it was brash and loud and, at a minimum, totally rocking. The look of intensity that came from Ezra’s eyes as he wailed and growled his personal lyrics was mesmerizing to me, and when he’d fall to his knees or grasp his head with his two hands during a song, it was pretty much feeling by visual osmosis. I was so wrapped up in the musical bubble he created at Luck Reunion, I couldn’t help but truly get lost in what he was singing and how he was singing it.
