AUSTIN, TX- One of the standouts from SXSW 2024 came on the very first day through an incredibly talented singer-songwriter named Forest Claudette. Sporting an infectious, pearly white smile, the 24-year-old brought their captivating and soulful voice all the way from Australia to Austin. Claudette was high atop my list of acts to see at South By, their voice layered with hints of early Frank Ocean.
Performing at Empire Garage for the High Road Touring Showcase, Claudette opened the evening weaving through enchanting renditions of songs with simple but sticky names such as “Creaming Soda,” “Violence,” and “Mess Around.” They spoke throughout the set about some of the challenges they went through in early life trying to find their true selves. Claudette is an openly queer artist, and their music encapsulates life’s growing pains while embracing Blackness and Queerness in an often unjust and close-minded world. A mixture of alternative R&B and pop, Claudette had me swaying solemnly at one moment and bopping around the next.
Despite the heavier lyrics present in “Violence” (see the found video below) about racial injustices or the deep introspection of self-identity that makes up “Kobe Beef,” Claudette maintained an affecting smile while sharing the inspirations behind their songs. It was a highly entertaining and endorphin-boosting performance that was a perfect way to kick off SXSW. I can’t recommend enough trying to catch Forest Claudette the next time they roll through to a city near you.
In recent news, Forest Claudette has released their latest EP, “Jupiter,” which features four tracks that delve into themes of love, identity, and empowerment. This EP follows the success of their previous work, “Everything Was Green,” which earned them an ARIA award for Best Soul/R&B Release. Claudette continues to enchant audiences with their unique blend of alternative R&B and soul, making significant waves both in Australia and internationally.
