AUSTIN, TX- Faux Real electrified the Lustre Pearl stage and grounds at SXSW 2024, delivering a set that blended post-punk, glam rock, and fresh beats. The Franco-American duo, comprised of brothers Elliott and Virgile Arndt, provided an inimitable musical experience for the Culture Collide showcase.
Faux Real’s origins trace back to their upbringing in a family with rich musical influences, combining the elegance of French musical traditions with the raw energy of American rock. The brothers started their musical journey at a young age, experimenting with various genres before finding their unique sound that marries post-punk intensity with glam-rock flair. Their early performances in small clubs quickly garnered attention, leading to a dedicated fanbase that appreciates their innovative approach to music.
The duo’s growth over the years has been marked by their fearless exploration of different musical styles and their ability to blend them seamlessly. Their debut album, “Faux Realism,” released in 2019, set the stage for their distinct sound, earning them critical acclaim and a growing legion of fans. At SXSW 2024, their choreographed song intros and full immersive audience participation made for one of the more enjoyable sets I experienced during the festival. Using the sprawling ‘lawn’ space of the venue, Faux Real created a ‘faux’ runway for themselves as they sang and jumped their way through the set. Their performance was not just a concert but an interactive experience that blurred the lines between the stage and the audience, making everyone feel like a part of the show.
Faux Real’s music can best be described as a vibrant fusion of energetic beats and melodic hooks that kept the audience grooving throughout the set. They performed tracks such as ‘Faux Maux,’ ‘Love on the Ground,’ and ‘Full Circle,’ each song offering a unique blend of alt-pop, post-punk, and glam rock elements. ‘Faux Maux’ stood out with its infectious rhythm and catchy lyrics, while ‘Love on the Ground’ showcased the duo’s ability to create emotionally resonant melodies. ‘Full Circle,’ one of their original hits, fused organic beats with dynamic drum hits, making it a standout moment in their performance.
The brothers’ stage presence was magnetic, with their singing, dancing, and vogue-ing captivating the audience. Their connection with the crowd was palpable, turning the performance into a shared celebration of music and movement. Faux Real recently released an EP entitled ‘Walking Away from My Demons,’ which I highly recommend giving a listen to. The EP continues their tradition of blending genres and pushing musical boundaries, offering a fresh take on their signature sound. With each release, they continue to grow as artists, expanding their musical horizons and solidifying their place in the music industry.
