As the day’s temperature was reaching its pinnacle, LA’s own Gateway Drugs took the stage to rock the crowd with their dark, psychedelic rock. Though their music, in my own personal opinion, is better suited in a dark, intimate setting (preferably with air-conditioning), their set under the blazing 5 o’clock sun was a tasty sampling of their grungy, melodic sound.
Dressed fashionably, albeit probably uncomfortably given the rising temperature, in black, the 3 siblings (Liv, Noa and Gabriel) and their friend (Blues Williams) played tunes that previous generations can relate to. There’s a very nostalgic, melancholic sex appeal in the artists’ stage presence, and their mix of new age and dark rock’n’roll was performed with a hazy swag that had audience members swaying in sweat. Notwithstanding the fact that the Niles siblings’ father is Preston Niles, from the The Knack, it was evident that musicality courses in the Niles’ veins.
The band opened for British group Wolf Alice last year at The Roxy Theatre, which is definitely something I regret missing. A female fronted 4-piece group is definitely addicting and once you’ve seen them live you may find yourself adding Gateway Drugs to your playlist.
