AUSTIN, TX- One of the most pleasant musical surprises I had at at SXSW was discovering the Nashville, TN based recording artist Dreamer Boy. Dreamer Boy is the musical project of Zach Taylor. Zach and roommate/producer Bobby Knepper collaborated on their debut project “Love, Nostalgia” in late 2018. I was at Bangers waiting to catch another act later on the in the day when two unassuming young men took to the stage, and proceeded to draw in an impressive crowd for an early afternoon set.
I was not expecting to hear what I heard from Dreamer Boy. It was some soulful vibes that had me feeling like I was listening to some old “best of” soul mix tape that I had dubbed together back in the 90s. Retro feels, but still had a modern edge to it all. Zach’s singing voice was surprisingly smooth and silky. Bobby’s production was impressively on point. Where did these guys come from, and why was this the first time I had heard of them?
The crowd was rather sparse when their performance started, but passersby’s were lured into their sonic web, and by the time they had finished up their set, those in the back were up front grooving along to the dream pop ditties that these two chaps from Tennessee were making.
I haven’t been seeing too much of Dreamer Boy on social media (stupid algorithms), but I just noticed that Dreamer Boy dropped a video on their Facebook page for their cut “Simple” which featured Savanna Dohler and Jamiah. The song gets a cute, Wes Anderson, make over which matches the dreamy vibe of the track. I wish I could embed the video directly into here, but you’ll have to click through to Facebook below to check it out.
Follow Dreamer Boy on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
