LOS ANGELES, CA- I always had a feeling that D.R.A.M. was a melodic rapper, but other than his hit single “Broccoli” ft. Lil Yachty, I really had no point of reference the he was as soulful as he was than when I saw him perform live at Air + Style. Sure, I’d also heard some of his other popular songs pop up on a Spotify playlist here and there, but it was always the featured perform who “sang” most of the hooks of his songs (i.e. Trippie Redd on “ILL NANA”).
What caught me by pleasant surprise was that D.R.A.M., without the aid of any surprise guests, seemed to sing most, if not all, of his hooks, and performed them quite well. His voice, without the aid of auto-tune (as far as I could tell), was strong and fluid, adding to the “sexy-time” vibe he established with cheeky (pun intended) visuals that projected behind him.
It was a fun performance that was made even more fun when D.R.A.M. got down from the stage to mix is up with the audience. All in all, a solid performance that opened my eyes, and ears, to the musical ability of an artist whose star seems perpetually on the rise.
