Long Beach, CA- As Old 97’s were bringing the country jams over on the main stage at Music Tastes Good, something entirely different was brewing on the other side of the festival. !!! -pronounced “Chk Chk Chk” in case you didn’t already know- was about to perform and I could already see a healthy sized crowd of people gathering as I approached the stage before their set. Even the photographer’s pit was overflowing. This looked like where all the action would be.
I took a seat on the barricade just as a gentleman behind me and in the crowd asked me if I have ever seen !!! before. I said no, and that I was pretty excited. “Just as heads up” he said, “Nic Offer [vocals] has a tendency to straddle the space in between the stage and the crash barricade. I doubt he can reach that far here, but just thought I’d let you know!” I thanked the lad before he went on to tell me how excited he was for the show and that he had travelled all the way from Texas just to see !!! again. He went into great detail of some of the antics of their live shows and it only made the anticipation to see them live just that much greater.
If you’ve never been to a !!! show, you’re really missing out on one of the greatest dance parties I’ve had the pleasure to document. The band came out guns blazing and went straight into their funkadelic sound as Nic Offer and Meah Pace hit the stage with their disco fever dancing. The energy coming off these two was just so contagious there wasn’t a single person I could see that wasn’t at least bobbing along to it (I even saw security moving around a little bit!). They made a vicious pair as their chemistry and hype was un matched by any other performance I caught that weekend. Nic didn’t mount himself on the barricade like I was told he might, but he still hopped off the stage and climbed the barricade with his mic in mouth. Like, almost completely in his mouth. I don’t even know how it was able to fit in there. After which he hopped it and joined the crowd and their frenzy.
This band has been around since 1996 but even in the twenty plus years that they have been rocking, they have shown no signs of slowing down and even just released their fifth studio album, “Shake The Shudder”, earlier this year. If you’ve never seen this band perform live, I highly suggest you do. And judging by the ferocity of this performance alone, it looks like they’re still going to be kicking around for a while!
