LOS ANGELES, CA- Another particularly stunning performance at Girlschool this year came from Chelsea Jade.
Without knowing anything about her or her music, my first impression when she took the stage was that her music and style would be downtempo and melodramatic. I had this unsubstantiated feeling based on her soft-spoken appearance and movements setting up to perform, figuring that it would be indicative of her performance. Boy, was I wrong.
Accompanied by a live drummer, synth player and two backing vocalists (one of whom was The Naked and Famous’ Alisa Xayalith), her showing at Girlschool was a well-oiled fierce machine. Chelsea’s soothing vocals glided over the undulating electronic instrumentation as her lyrics were punctuated by strong choreographed moves and dynamic stage lighting production. This was a performance that was larger than its venue, and it was pretty damn awesome to behold.
Apparently, Chelsea’s music career has been getting some much needed support as of late as she’s mentioned on Facebook that she’s been able to enlist the help of friends to help her navigate the music business. She’s indicated that it may take a moment to “adujst[] to new resources and get[] everyone on the same page” before she releases more music, but I, for one, will be waiting eagerly to hear, and see, what she’s got in store for us.
