LOS ANGELES, CA- In the heart of West Hollywood, the vibrant epicenter of LGBTQ+ culture and activism, the annual Pride celebrations came alive with an undeniable energy and sense of unity. To capture the essence of this celebration, we spoke with a handful of willing participants to ask them ask them what it means to celebrate Pride in West Hollywood.
The voices we encountered conveyed a collective spirit of inclusivity, empowerment, and freedom.
At least for me, my day-to-day, I’m not seeing a lot of people in our community everywhere. So kind of just seeing everybody come together in one place.
****
It’s just really nice seeing people come together, have fun, and enjoy themselves the way they are in a friendly environment where they can feel comfortable enough to be who they want to be.
We Could go to any pride, but there’s just no drama here. We can just be ourselves.
“There’s no limits. You can totally be yourself.”
****
“I’m originally from Georgia, and just coming out to California, I’ve never felt more free in general. Everybody is just, ‘It is what it is’. You can have fun. You can dance. You wear what you want to wear. You can love who you want to love.
****
“I think they’re just something about being prideful, and you can just feel it every place you go. All the love. And the courage. You can be prideful in who you are and it’s just so beautiful.”
West Hollywood is who I work for and who I am. I was 18 years old when I started working for the criminal courts building in a straight society. I was always a woman… thank god… I was in the army. I served 18 years. And I’ve always been a person who helped transgendered.Thank god for that that I helped the transgendered community, because I wouldn’t be here without them. LGBT to me means a lot. These are my friends, and they will always be there for me.
Everybody is open to be themselves. Everyone is cool and there’s always good vibes in West Hollywood. It’s not the same in Vegas. There’s not as many people dressing cool and being themselves outwardly as much as we like to. And Vegas Pride is at night, and we like the sun.
