Catching Up With Speed of Light
LOS ANGELES, CA- SPEED OF LIGHT is a trio out of Santa Monica, California and they rock hard. Like, REAL hard. What’s makes them special, you ask? Aren’t there plenty of bands these days who “rock”? Well… for one, they’re siblings. Second, they’re all teens. One isn’t even old enough to drive! The fact that they can rock as hard as, if not harder, than peers twice their age is pretty damn amazing. Full stop. It’s just my humble opinion, but with Cameron (18) shredding the guitar, Tyler (16) smashing the drums, and Riley (15) thumping out basslines while singing her brains out, these kids are living proof that the future of rock and roll are in good hands.
I was able to catch them play the day before Halloween when they rocked an afternoon gig at the Redwood Bar in downtown Los Angeles. Dressed up in creepy costumes and painted with fake blood, they delighted the room with their raucous music, even inducing a little moshpit on the tiny dance floor.
Despite the pandemic, 2021 turned out to be a pretty good year for them. I was able to catch up with them to get a sense of how the year went, and what they are looking forward to. Enjoy.
With the year coming to an end, in a nutshell, how was it?
“2021 was great. It was good getting back into shows and seeing old friends again. A lot of great unexpected stuff happened to us — everything from Wes Borland championing us on a Twitch Channel, to having our songs get discovered by the South American audience! We were also approached by a handful of labels, which was really cool and overwhelming.” – Tyler
[FYI: DWPresents debuted a Twitch channel with a live kick-off event on June 3, 2021 and featured several hours of entertainment, including performances from Widow 7 and Speed of Light, the two finalists in That Space Zebra Show’s “Road to LA” competition.]
Anything in particular? The Wes Borland co-sign is dope, but was there anything about 2021 that was particularly special?
“The best part of 2021 was probably writing new music, and exploring different directions for our band. All three of us have different influences, so it was interesting cramming them all together and seeing what came out the other side. Personally, I can’t wait to see where we’re heading.” -Riley
How about the future? Anything up your sleeves for 2022? What can we expect?
“2022 is definitely going to be interesting. There’s a lot we can’t talk about right now. But if all goes as planned, it’s going to be another crazy adventure. Even if it doesn’t happen, we’re having a blast along the way. We didn’t plan anything for 2021 and it took us to places we couldn’t even imagine. This time last year there was no way we would’ve dreamed we’d have the opportunities we have now. We can’t wait to see what happens in 2022.” – Cameron
