SPICEWOOD, TX- Back in March, I caught Briscoe’s set at Luck Reunion under the open skies of Willie Nelson’s ranch. It was the kind of afternoon that makes you forget to check your phone. The sun was shining, the crowd was mellow, and Briscoe’s breezy sound felt tailor-made for that golden moment. Their performance had an easygoing charm, anchored in tight harmonies and acoustic textures that carried over the fields like a warm wind.
Their new single, “Heat of July,” taps into that same spirit of nostalgia and understated storytelling. Released ahead of their upcoming full-length album of the same name (due September 19 via ATO Records), the track captures the shimmer and sweat of West Texas summers and the deeper emotional terrain that comes with them. The production, helmed by Brad Cook (Waxahatchee, Nathaniel Rateliff), keeps things simple—letting the vivid lyrics and steady melodies breathe.
“Denver’s a drive we can do in a day,” sings Philip Lupton in the song’s opening lines, setting the stage for a sun-baked road trip that doubles as a meditation on memory, love, and personal growth. The verses are rich with sensory detail—the smell of rain on hot asphalt, the slow burn of heartache, the feeling of youth slipping through your fingers like heat waves off the pavement. It’s a love letter to the land and to the lives built on it.

There’s nothing overly flashy about “Heat of July,” and that’s precisely its strength. Like a well-worn photograph or a long drive with someone who knows all your stories, the track lingers in the way it makes you feel. You don’t have to be from Texas to understand what Briscoe is getting at—you just have to have ever missed something, or someone, with the changing of a season.
Lupton and bandmate Truett Heintzelman wrote much of the album while touring across North America, turning hotel rooms and highway rest stops into songwriting sessions. And you can hear that restlessness in the music. There’s a quiet resolve in the lyrics, a recognition that life keeps pushing forward even as we try to hold onto the fleeting moments that define us.
“Hot July keeps breaking in / Something about it makes me feel like I’m home,” they sing, and you believe them. Because whether they’re opening for Dave Matthews Band, playing AmericanaFest in Nashville, or performing at Austin City Limits this fall, Briscoe never sound like they’ve strayed too far from their roots.
“Heat of July” may be a preview of bigger things for the duo, but it’s also a reaffirmation of what makes their music work in the first place: honesty, restraint, and a clear-eyed affection for the physical and emotional landscapes that they’ve shared. Sometimes, the best songs don’t try to dazzle. They just pull you in, slow you down, and let you breathe.
