AUSTIN, TX- SXSW is a haven for discovering new talent, and this year, I found myself utterly captivated by the UK-based band Bodur. Known for their eclectic sound and intricate compositions, Bodur’s live performance was nothing short of a sonic revelation.
Formed in London, Bodur has quickly risen through the ranks of the indie music scene with its unique blend of pop and ethnic influences. Fronted by the charismatic and vocally gifted Chloe Bodur, the band initially started as a solo project before expanding into a full ensemble. This expansion has allowed their sound to evolve and mature, incorporating a rich tapestry of instruments and rhythms that set them apart from the typical pop fare. Their music seems to be a celebration of cultural fusion, seamlessly blending Western pop sensibilities with Eastern musical traditions, creating a sound that is both familiar and refreshingly new.

However lots of my released music doesn’t feature the band members as it’s still my own solo project.”
From the moment they took the stage, it was clear that Bodur was something special. The band was larger than I expected, and they used every instrument in their arsenal to fill out their sound. As the opening notes boomed from the speakers, I was immediately struck by the complexity and depth of their music.
Chloe Bodur’s voice is a powerful instrument in itself, effortlessly navigating the intricate melodies and rhythms laid down by her bandmates. The full band played with an intensity and precision that is rarely seen in pop music, each member contributing to the rich, layered sound that defines Bodur. Their music, while undeniably pop at its core, was infused with ethnic rhythms and tones that added a unique dimension to their performance.
In my opinion, what sets Bodur apart from other bands in the genre is their ability to blend diverse musical elements into a cohesive and compelling whole. Their performance at SXSW was a masterclass in musical fusion. The band’s use of “normal” instruments alongside modern electronic elements created a soundscape that was both intricate and accessible. Each song had a hypnotic pulse, gradually building layers of synths and guitar before Chloe’s vocals entered, soaring above the complex instrumentation. The result was music that was as danceable as it was musically thought-provoking.
Throughout their set, I found myself constantly amazed by the sheer complexity of Bodur’s music. Each song was a journey, taking the audience through a series of musical landscapes that were as diverse as they were cohesive. The band’s ability to seamlessly transition between different styles and tempos kept the audience on their toes, never quite knowing what to expect next. It’s kind of like a Hiatus Kaiyote with a Middle Eastern flare.
While Bodur’s music is undeniably rooted in pop, it is its incorporation of ethnic elements that truly sets it apart. The rhythms and tones of its music draw heavily from Eastern musical traditions, creating a sound that is both familiar and exotic. However, it is important to note that Bodur’s music is not derivative. While they draw inspiration from a variety of sources, they have managed to create a sound that is uniquely their own. Their ability to blend these diverse influences into a cohesive whole is a testament to their musical prowess and creativity.
