Brooklyn Bowl, NY — Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears are an Austin-based band that melds blues, jazz, funk, soul and rock into a distinct rock and roll sound that pays heritage to rock and roll’s past while giving it an innovative twist for the modern age. On September 16th, they brought their rocking sounds to the Brooklyn Bowl, putting on one hell of a show that still has my ears ringing (reminder to bring earplugs next time).
Led by Joe Lewis and his guitar, the band brought a relentless energy to the venue, that had the room shaking. The venue is also a bowling ally, and though it wasn’t confirmed, I honestly think that the sound-waves blasting from the speakers even knocked down a few pins. The amps were turned all the way up to a Spinal Tap 11, and were further enhanced with microphones pointing toward them. This gave the small venue an almost stadium concert feel.
There was a heavy focus on guitar solos throughout the performance. The majority of Joe Lewis’s songs began with great rhythm that can only be described as “funky” – the bass and drums setting a beat with guitars and saxophone coming in to add the flare. However, jams would crescendo into some pretty wild guitar solos. On occasion Lewis even appeared to be playing with his teeth (see gallery below for photographic evidence).
No matter where you were during the show, the music was loud and rocking with sonics coming from a wide range of musical instruments including saxophones, flutes and tambourines. I felt that these interesting musical combos gave the performance a unique sound as it didn’t allow for the music to be classified into one specific genre.
From what I could tell (and feel for myself), the crowd absolutely loved every minute. Girls were dancing, couples were dancing, even those who came by themselves couldn’t resist bopping and swaying (myself included). A lucky fan in the front row even got a fist bump from Joe Lewis himself (see photographic evidence in the gallery below).
The last tidbit worth mentioning are the actual songs – they’re pretty NSFW when you listen in. With titles such as “Bitch, I Love You”, “Booty City”, and “Get Yo Shit”, Lewis gets raunchy and the audience loved it. Safe to say Saturday nights are a wild time when Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears are in town, so definitely check them out when they are in your neck of the woods!
