LOS ANGELES, CA- A few days ago, I found myself in a pretty bad place. The circumstances that put me there haven’t necessarily improved, but sometimes you stumble across a song at exactly the moment you need it. For me, that song was Becky Hill’s “Changes.”
“Changes” arrives as the latest glimpse of Hill’s forthcoming album, REBECCA, which is set for release on November 13 (my birthday, by the way…). The project finds the two-time BRIT Award winner continuing to stretch the boundaries of her dance-pop foundation, with recent singles “>>>hands on me<<<,” “what do i have to do?” and “More! More! More!” offering different shades of what Hill has described as the album’s “curated chaos.” The album will also extend some familiar creative relationships, including new collaborations with Sonny Fodera and MEDUZA, artists with whom Hill has previously found considerable success. Those two tracks were important enough to Hill that their completion contributed to REBECCA’s move to its November release date, with both ultimately appearing exclusively on the album’s digital edition.
The specifics of the song don’t necessarily mirror what I’m going through. It was something else that connected with me: the feeling of it. “Changes” has this uplifting, anthemic quality that gradually builds until all of that emotion finally spills over into a euphoric dance-floor release. There was something about that crescendo, paired with lyrics about persevering through uncertainty, that genuinely lifted my spirits. For a few minutes, it gave me something to feel inspired by.
And Hill has exactly the kind of voice needed to make that sentiment land. She doesn’t simply ride the production. She powers it. As the verses build toward the chorus, there is a firmness and conviction in her delivery that makes the eventual release feel earned. Then the production opens up around her, transforming that emotional tension into something enormous, energetic and cathartic.
What I particularly like about “Changes” is that the optimism doesn’t feel completely detached from reality. The song acknowledges that relationships can become consumed by routine, that people carry fears and emotional baggage with them, and that simply loving someone doesn’t make those things disappear. There is uncertainty running through the verses. But instead of dwelling there, Hill keeps pushing forward, and the music follows her.
That structure is important. “Changes” doesn’t arrive at its emotional payoff immediately. It builds toward it. The production gradually increases the pressure behind Hill’s vocal until the chorus feels less like another section of the song and more like a release. It’s the kind of dynamic that dance music can deliver particularly well: taking an emotion that feels internal and private and suddenly making it feel huge enough to fill a room.
There is also something reassuring about the central idea of staying present while everything around you is changing. You don’t necessarily need to be experiencing the same relationship described in the song to connect with that sentiment. Change is universal. So is uncertainty. Sometimes all you really want is some indication that whatever you’re dealing with isn’t permanent, or at least that you’ll be able to make your way through it.
Maybe that is why “Changes” hit me the way it did. I wasn’t looking for a song that perfectly described my situation. I didn’t need Becky Hill to articulate exactly what I was feeling. I needed the energy, the build, that powerhouse voice and the sense of forward motion that comes when everything finally explodes into the chorus.
That combination is what makes “Changes” such a banger. The production can make you want to move, but Hill’s powerhouse vocal gives all of that energy somewhere to go. Even when the story being told isn’t your own, the emotion behind it can be. Sometimes that’s enough. Sometimes a song doesn’t have to understand exactly what you’re going through to show up at exactly the right time.
