AUSTIN, TX- When it comes to SXSW, and all the new music that comes into Austin, there are bound to be sacrifices that need to be made. You can’t catch all of the artist’s performing in Austin.
When I received the email from Adam Melchor’s publicist with the song “Real Estate”, I made it a point to try to find a performance of his in Austin catch. Unfortunately, all of his listed performances at SXSW conflicted with prior arrangements I made made.
Fast forward to my first day at SXSW, and while I’m waiting for the show case at the Capital One House with St. Paul & The Broken Bones headlining, the evening’s host jumped on stage to announce the last minute addition of Adam to the evening’s line-up. Talk about pleasant surprises.
Adam’s music is soft and light, story telling in nature and immeasurably pleasant to the ear. Though the early crowd at Antone’s was expectedly noisy as most were ordering drink from the bar or catching up with friends, Adam’s beautifully simply melodies made a handful of those in attendance stop what they were doing to see show was performing up on stage. He performed the song that hooked me the first time I played it, and he also performed a handful of songs that I assume comprise of his recently released EP (which, at three songs and interlude, is more like a maxi-single), Plan On You, which was released on March 22nd.
Adam, genuinely excited to be in Austin performing at his first SXSW, was all smiles during his performance. He was on stage all by his lonesome, but the joy that he radiated as he performed, even during the more restrained melodies, brightened up Austin’s “Home Of The Blues”.
