RECAPGotta love The Struts. Gotta love them for being exactly what they are: unapologetic nouveau glam rock brits. Lots of gold lamé and other various shiny shimmery fabrics. A little Mick Jagger, a little Bay City Rollers … the weight of their precursors hangs over the stage like a guardian angel pushing them toward the asymptote of their own unique energy. And damn, when Luke Spiller belts out the chorus to “Could Have Been Me”, whoo! got goosebumbs all over. It’s a rock anthem for all time.

And if you don’t feel that on the radio, you can’t deny it live. Because even though God doesn’t sculpt mortals like Freddie Mercury anymore, she was kind enough to shave off a healthy chip of marble from that statue and weave it into Spiller’s DNA. The band brings that same sense of joy, energy, exuberance, and rock pageantry to the stage. Because rock should be a pageant in the truest sense of the definition of the word: an elaborate public dramatic presentation, a spectacular procession or celebration, [perhaps even] a pompous or ostentatious display. Because don’t we have enough tortured emo sacs in the music right now?

The Struts as a live experience annihilate any space for morose and self-indulgent introspection. You look at them and it’s like, damn, if those homies are having THAT much fun … I kinda have to enjoy myself too. That’s a special gift. Not everyone can pull it off so you have to embrace it when you find it. And it’s hella sexy. In fact, I’ll take it a step further. As we shift into a historical moment where at least a sliver of society is deconstructing the heteronormative binaries of gender role, I’ll go on record and say that if I were to ever dip my toe in the waters of pansexuality and make out with another dude, Luke Spiller would be near the top of my list. That’s all I got. Great set. Wouldn’t blink to see these guys headline at any venue.
