The Shacks’ Dreamy Sonics Will Put You In a Starry-Eyed “Haze” THOUGHTS+PHOTOS: The Shacks @ Austin Convention Center | SXSW 3/16/18
AUSTIN, TX- For most of our SXSW artist coverage, we’ll keep it relatively short and sweet. We have over 80 artists to cover, so cut us some slack! 😉 We’ll basically be formatting each post into two parts: (1) Why our contributor wanted to see this act and (2) what our contributor thought of the performance”. Easy peasy. If you want to learn more about the act, make sure you click through to their social media links to get in the know. You won’t be disappointed!
Why I Wanted To See The Shacks: Pixie dust. That’s all I could think about when I played The Shacks 2016 self titled album. I envisioned fairies tossing wishes into the air as the breeze propelled them into the sky. Think I’m slightly exaggerating? Have a a listen:
When I read that they were planning on releasing another album, Haze, I decided to catch them live to see if their new material would give me the same feels.
What I Thought Of The Shacks’ Performance: Yup. Their new music was about as dreamy as the older songs in their repertoire. There were a couple of songs that I heard that had noticeably more uptempo rhythms (probably “Follow Me” or “Birds” … I didn’t take much video, so I can’t confirm what songs they performed during this performance, but my notes specifically stated “upbeat material”), but in all instances I was transported into a romantic soundscape.
Their sonics were wonderfully mixed in a grand ballroom of the Austin Convention Center, but all I could think of was much much better suited their music would be for sitting on a patch of grass at an open field music festival. After I took a few photos, I truly wanted to just lay out on the ground, close my eyes, and have Shannon lull me into a hazy dream.
