Dana Point, CA- If you were looking for some fun on the second day of The Ohana Fest, you should have gotten to the festival early to catch The Frights. This San Diego based band’s surf punk sonics that are sprinkled with some genuinely pop elements, delighted the crowd with their loose and carefree performance.

After their first song, their lead singer, Mikey Carnevale, announced, “Thank you Obama Fest,” which drew laughs and cheers from the crowd. They proceeded to unleash their fun garage rock to the masses who were able to make it out to the festival early.

Midway through their set, they expressed their great joy being invited to perform at The Ohana Fest. With the beach mere meters away, their lead singer marveled,  “It can’t get any better than this.”

During their songs, they riffed a bunch on a bunch of popular songs like Metallica’s “Enter Sandman”, also covering bits and pieces of Green Day and Smashmouth in their frenetic pop-punk style. Towards the end of their set Mikey announced, “Bad news, guys, We’ve got 7 minutes and no songs left.” They then proceeded to close out their set with a smattering of snippets of popular songs, making each cover their own.

Though their setlist wasn’t completely their own, the performed each cut with a singular type of joy and enthusiasm that made that performance solely their own.
