Hollywood, CA- Recording artists who root their music in the past are often considered “throwbacks”, running the risk of being pigeonholed in a category that lends itself to “he sounds great but is he as good as so and so” comparisons. But when “modern vintage” is done just right, with original music that pays homage too the past while staying in the present, and performed with an inimitable sincerity, it doesn’t get much better that Pete Molinari.

On August 9, 2017, Pete headlined an installation of The Standard Hotel’s “Desert Nights” concert series. Armed with just an acoustic guitar, and performed a series of heartfelt compositions that embodied the modern vintage sound.  While strumming his acoustic guitar, his voice, which has that familiar twang that falls somewhere between John Fogerty and Arlo Guthrie, gently wooed us as a cool summer breeze filled the room.

A friend of mine once suggested to me that Pete is probably a “musician’s musician”- “the guy that pro jocks want around when they’re at a recording studio or a house party because he can jump in on any song without a lot of ego stroking or maintenance costs”. On this evening I saw that suggestion materialize before my eyes.

After a couple numbers solo, Pete mentioned that he had a handful of friends in the audience and throughout the course of the rest of his set, invited them up to join him in song. Fiona Silver, Miranda Lee Richards, Mina Mauldin, Jessica Maros, Reverand Jeff Zarus … even the host, Valida Carroll, came up to sing either duets or background vocals for the balance of Pete’s set, wonderfully complimenting Pete’s Dylan/Guthrie vocals with lush feminine sonics.

The bevy of beautiful women – and the Reverend- joining Pete didn’t surprise me one bit. As you watch and listen to Pete perform, you instantly recognize the authenticity of his soul, and that kind of trait draws people like bees to honey.
