Larkin Poe’s Undeniable Enthusuiasm Kicks Off Miles Davis House At SXSW THOUGHTS+PHOTOS: LARKIN POE @ ANTONE'S | SXSW 3/17/18
AUSTIN, TX- For most of our SXSW artist coverage, we’ll keep it relatively short and sweet. We have over 80 artists to cover, so cut us some slack! 😉 We’ll basically be formatting each post into two parts: (1) Why our contributor wanted to see this act and (2) what our contributor thought of the performance”. Easy peasy. If you want to learn more about the act, make sure you click through to their social media links to get in the know. You won’t be disappointed!
Why I Wanted To See Larkin Poe: At the suggestion of one my close friends, it was recommended that I should attend Miles Davis House while I was in Austin. It turns out my friend’s friend is Erin Davis, the son of seminal trumpeter and jazz legend Miles Davis. It also turned out that Larkin Poe was the first act slated to perform for Mile Davis House’s showcase.
Presented by Miles Davis Estate in association with Legacy Recordings/Sony Music Entertainment and Riviera Imports, Miles Davis House is an annual SXSW day party hosted by the Miles Davis family and featuring a wide cross section of multi-genre emerging talent, the next generation of musical disruptors. In the spirit of Miles, the celebration promotes music, art and cultural progressiveness.
By all accounts, Larkin Poe’s approach to music embodies the ethos of Miles Davis House. This American, roots rock sister-duo stays true to their Southern musical heritage while also infusing their own modern blues sensibilities into the music they perform. There were only 3 acts that I saw multiple times during SXSW and Larkin Poe was one of them. This was the 4th time I watched Megan and Rebecca perform live.
What I Thought Of Larkin Poe’s Performance: At noon on a Saturday, Larkin Poe played with the same kind of energy they did the night before opening up for Keith Urban at Stubb’s. Even after 7 gigs, this one being their 8th- with their ninth just a couple hours after they left the Miles Davis House stage- Megan and Rebecca sang and shredded their hearts out with an undeniable enthusiasm and gusto.
It’s that energy that draws me to them whenever I find out that they have a gig scheduled in the same city I’m in. It’s the synergy that these two sisters share- a synergy that’s more than just musical- that takes their live performance to another level. It’s a spiritual bond that’s been culled by something more than just the hours of practice and playing with each other. It’s an energy formed through family, and that kind of energy was the perfect kick off for the Miles Davis House showcase.
