For every artist we decided to catch at SXSW, we decided to review each performance with our own version of “Five Ws and One H” answering the questions: 1) Who are they, 2) What kind of music do they play, 3) When did they play, 4) Where are they based, 5) Why did we decide to catch them play and 6), How was their performance.
WHO: Katerina Alexandre Hartford Graham p/k/a “Kat” Graham, the Swiss-born American actress, model, singer and dancer best known for her featured role as Bonnie Bennett on “The Vampire Diaries”.
WHAT: Funky Pop music that leans towards disco.
WHEN: 3/13/2017 at The Happiest of Hours (sponsored by Nylon and Twitter) at Bar 96.
WHERE: Los Angeles, CA
WHY: To be honest, I had no idea she was scheduled to perform at this venue on this date.
HOW: With the long running television series “The Vampire Diaries” concluding after its 8 year run, Ms. Graham used SXSW as a vehicle to remind the world that before she found global fame on the small screen, she was an accomplished singer and dancer. Her performance this afternoon was short, but she used it to showcase the possible direction she’s heading with her music: funky groove based dance cuts with strong bass lines that hint a little bit towards the era of disco. Considering that “The Vampire Diaries” will most likely end up in syndication, Kat should have some freedom and resources to explore as many different music paths as her heart desires.
