Los Angeles, CA- Start with High-flying masked wrestlers, add burlesque striptease, high-flying acrobatics and sprinkle comedy throughout and you’ve got the Lucha VaVOOM recipe. Celebrating 15 years at their de facto home at the historic Mayan Theater, this latest installation of Lucha VaVOOM was a night of debauchery that did not leave the audience disappointed. Jeff B. Davis, of “Whose Live Anyway?” fame, and Blaine Capatch continued a tradition of shameless comedic banter to host an expectedly very unconventional Quiceañera themed Lucha Libre event.
Sexy costumes and tight bodies flying through the air. Girls and guys alike flaunting their stuff, this is how the evening begins. Kate Minwegen swinging, spinning, and flexing from high above the stage was the centerpiece for the first act that set the tone for an eccentric and erotic affair. Moving on and keeping true to the Quinceañera theme the Lucha VaVOOM ladies paraded the stage in extravagant dresses accompanied by their suited and masked luchador chambelanes. The spectacle culminated with the last Quincieañera on the stage, Molly D’ Amour. Carrying her muñeca(doll) and promptly destroying it, heels out, in a display of a rite of passage that charged the audience. Hosts Blaine and Jeff call out “Lucha!” and the theater responding in step, “VaVOOM!”, we were off to the first match.
The fight card for the night consisted of three rounds of tournament style and one-on-one bouts with a host of luchadores including Crazy Chickens, Dirty Sanchez, Chupacabras, Li’l Cholo, and Piñatita. All were matching their characters, spot on, in costume and attitude. Supervising the ring was referee Platainito in classic Lucha Libre style taking the position of judge and sometimes participant. The skill and execution of this cast was a sight to see, absolutely exceptional.
The hosts of the evening kept everything in balance, introducing the next spectacle of strip-tease burlesque as counterpoint to the action in the ring. Performances by Carolina Cerisola, Bonita La Belle, Kitten DeVille, Leigh Acosta, Lux LaCroix, and more fulfilled the Lucha VaVOOM promise of a “little sexo with our violencia”. Everyone guy or girl had their eyes wide open and focused on the burlesque striptease acrobatics. Again we hear the “Lucha!” call and booming response “VaVOOM!” and it’s time for more wrestling.
Li’l Cholo, a veteran of the SoCal wrestling scene, was deservedly the star of the night. The tournament battle for the belt ultimately had Li’l Cholo pitted against title holder Dirty Sanchez, whose raunchy antics left Chocolate Caliente blinded and out of luck just a year ago. With the help of Piñatito, Li’l Cholo unseated the unprepared Dirty Sanchez from his top spot in the circuit. The saga continues and the tradition of Lucha Libre is alive and well with the next generation of Luchadores performing to audience cheers.
Congratulations goes out to founders Rita D’ Albert and Liz Fairbain who have kept Lucha VaVOOM going strong 15 years strong. There is no sign of slowing down as Lucha VaVOOM returns this Halloween with the next episode of their unique brand of entertainment. Back to back shows will be hosted on October 25th and 26th at the Mayan, if you’re feeling adventurous and maybe a bit naughty, you don’t want to miss out!
