If there is an up and coming artist that you want launching a summer concert series, you can’t do much better than selecting  Gavin Turek for that honor. This multitalented artist knows how to put on a show, and her exuberance was on full display at the Skirball Cultural Center kicking off its 20th year of summer concerts.

Gavin Turek at Into the Night: Summer SOULstice @ the Skirball 7/8/16. SetlistThe performance started off with some technical difficulties (her mic wasn’t properly connected), but she joked that it gave us the chance to watch her lip sync and perform her “dance warm up.” After breaking the ice, she asked the audience to look in the eyes of the person standing at their side and tell them to let the mood and music lead everybody to have have a good time and to “not fight the feeling” to dance. She then paid homage to those lives lost in the recent, senseless shootings; and under a bright  crescent moon, in the still of the night, with only the toads in the pond behind her murmuring, that silent respect was paid en masse.

But that would be the evening’s only moment of gravitas. From there, Gavin took the crowd on a groovy, booty shaking sonic journey. With her trademark frilled dress, athletic dancing and her exuberant smile, it was easy to get lost in her performance despite the tragic news that seems to fill our headlines every other day as of late.

Though the venue was large, Gavin kept the performance very intimate, maintaining a personable rapport with the audience throughout. Even musical missteps were turned into memorable moments of inclusion. After false starting a song, Gavin giggled into the mic that that moment was a bit awkward, but then looked to audience and asked, “Can we all be awkward together? We can all be awkward together,” which resulted in the audience cheering the sentiment.

Gavin’s summer is only getting started. With a new single, “Fade Out” by Viceroy featuring her vocals (which was also performed at the show), and an upcoming performance at the Hammer Museum featuring TOKiMONSTA, we’ll surely be hearing more form the the fabulously talented Ms. Turek.
