From Worlds Apart, Flora Cash Came Together to Deliver at SXSW The Chemistry Of The International Duo Is Undeniable
AUSTIN, TX- My night session of Day 2 took place at Banger’s for the Stubhub Sound Stage showcase. It was a particularly interesting night for me because I was unfamiliar with the artists and that always adds a sense of intrigue to the performances. First up was an American-Swedish duo by the name of Flora Cash. Comprised of Cole Randall from Minneapolis and Shpresa Lleshaj from Stockholm, the two found each other’s music via Soundcloud and formed an online friendship that blossomed into a relationship and and then marriage. A true 21st century love story, if you will.
On stage, it was just the two of them, both with bleached shoulder length hair and their instruments. Randall had an acoustic guitar while Lleshaj was equipped with just a microphone, and a laptop with a small soundboard attachment. As they began their set I was immediately struck by the chemistry between them. At that point, I didn’t know they were husband and wife so it was just a pure unbiased feeling that resonated with me. They perform in a duet style that works off of each other’s different vocal strengths in perfect compliment. While Randall plays his guitar and sings in a low lullaby, Lleshaj would introduce a background electric bass and overlap with her beautiful soprano voice.
Their set consisted of a mix from the two albums they had released till that point: Can Summer Love Last Forever? and Nothing Lasts Forever (And It’s Fine). Flora Cash’s music is largely inspired by their relationship and everything that they’ve had to overcome to be together and to achieve success as artists. Their genre can be best described as electronic folk due to the rhythmic bass and occasional synths that accompany Randall’s acoustic guitar. The songs are mellow and soothing, yet the lyrics are strong and even heavy at times.
The crowd at Bangers, however, was vibing with Flora Cash from start to finish, swaying with each song and letting the soothing voices of Randall and Lleshaj overcome them. Flora Cash ended the night with their two most popular songs “You’re Somebody Else”, and “They Own This Town” that are featured on a newly released EP called “Press”. I really enjoyed seeing this couple share their melodic and enchanting music and highly I recommend checking them out on their current US tour.
