The last artist I was able to catch at Broke L.A. was Lexie Papillon’s Bloodboy. I read somewhere online that Lexie was a surfer turned rocker, and watching her live performance I was thoroughly impressed with the physicality that she embodied into her music.

Her music lends itself to her joyfully hyperactive stage presence. The music itself is grand, thumping, pop-punk infused gems that will make even the shyest of wall flowers want to jump around like Ms. Butterly did (Papillion is french for butterfly). If she hadn’t mentioned it, I would never have noticed that one of the heels of her stiletto boots had broken, because she still danced around like a whirling dervish with every beat her band played behind her.

And the fearless attitude that Lexie poured out on stage was part punk and part pop, and totally fabulous. Music, even great music, needs to have a great live visual in order for it to connect with audiences, to draw them in and to hook them.  Lexie seems to have that charisma which will surely be able to draw in more and more fans over time. I’m looking forward to hearing (and seeing) more from this artist.
