Wye Oak Put On A Primetime Show at the Austin Convention Day Stage For SXSW

AUSTIN, TX- For most of our SXSW artist coverage, we’ll keep it relatively short and sweet. We have over 80 artists to cover, so cut us some slack! 😉 We’ll basically be formatting each post into two parts: (1) Why our contributor wanted to see this act and (2) what our contributor thought of the performance. Why I Wanted To See Wye Oak: I kicked off Day 3 of my SXSW adventures and music exploration by heading down to the Austin Convention Center Radio Day Stage to catch a few acts. The first of which was Wye Oak, a three person band led by Jenn Wasner, who I saw gain some buzz leading up to the festival in anticipation for the release of their new album The Louder I Call, The Faster It Runs. So when I saw that they were in the Day Stage lineup for Day 3, I was interested to see what their music was all about.

What I Thought Of Wye Oak’s Performance: Being a day showcase, Wye Oak’s set was short and sweet but it packed a punch. Despite the crowd not being too sizable they gave a strong performance exhibiting their (indie rock) style with an electronic-pop twist.

Wye Oak’s busy schedule at SXSW (four gigs in two days by my count) was a lead up to the release of their new album “The Louder I Call, The Faster It Runs”, which was released on April 6, 2018. They took these performances as an opportunity to play their new music live for the first time. My attendance at the Convention Center was their first SXSW performance and perhaps the first time they had ever played their new songs to a big audience.

While I was unfamiliar with their new music, what stood out the most to me was Wasner’s passion throughout the set. The guitar-laden and even keyboard parts allowed her to rock out with hair-flipping fervor that was more fit for an arena than a convention center stage. Wye Oak is touring the U.S. with The Louder I Call, The Faster It Runs album now out, so go see them live when they’re in your neck of the woods.
