LOS ANGELES, CA- Wolf Alice’s new single “Just Two Girls,” off their fourth album The Clearing, is one of those tracks that sneaks up on you. On paper, the lyrics lean heavy. The lyrics themselves contemplate beauty standards, possessions, and overthinking everything in the room. But in practice, the groove is breezy and the melody carefree, almost as if these existential musings are just playful afterthoughts shared over drinks. It’s a contrast that makes the song land, in my humble opinion, particularly intriguing.
Ellie Rowsell’s words carry the spark of late-night honesty: “She looked so pretty, it was fucking offensive,” she sings with a wink, followed by exchanges of “you’re so right” and “you’re so wise” that feel lifted straight from an intimate friendship. The chorus, with its mantra of “Just two girls at the bar, like two kids in the park / Here’s the stage, you’re the star,” distills those conversations into a kind of anthem for validation. It’s that joy of feeling seen by someone who just gets you.
The accompanying music video elevates that energy into a full-blown cinematic romp. Directed by Colin Solal Cardo and starring Lucy Boynton (Bohemian Rhapsody), the clip begins with a simple dinner before spiraling into gleeful chaos. Choreographer Ryan Heffington injects movement that feels both spontaneous and deliberate, turning mischief into art. It’s a fitting visual partner to a song that’s equal parts intimate and unruly.
What stands out most to me is Wolf Alice’s meticulous approach to video-making. Having covered their earlier clip “Bloom, Baby Bloom,” I’ve come to appreciate the level of detail they pour into the visuals. From the camera movement to the choreography, and the sheer polish of the final cut, “Just Two Girls” is no exception. The production values are striking, setting a bar that few of their peers consistently hit. It’s proof that when a band treats video-making as an extension of their artistry rather than an afterthought, the music itself feels bigger, sharper, and even more alive.
Coming off an already legendary summer run at Glastonbury, Radio 1’s Big Weekend, and Primavera Sound, Wolf Alice are now gearing up for a sold-out North American tour that kicks off September 10 in Atlanta. With every show at capacity, “Just Two Girls” feels like a celebration of connection, validation, and the kind of friendships that make life’s hang-ups easier to swallow… all wrapped in one of the coolest, most casually confident tracks the band has released to date.
