LOS ANGELES, CA– KROQ’s Almost Acoustic Christmas always includes new and up and coming artists alongside legends of the station, showcasing acts like Lorde and Billie Eilish before superstardom. One of this year’s new artists was pop-punk band The Paradox. Thanks to the virality of Tik Tok, the Atlanta group found themselves blowing up overnight and soon shared the stage with Green Day, Third Eye Blind, Jack White and Lil Nas X. Their debut video garnered them close to a million social media followers within three weeks — not bad for a group whose members are mostly in their early twenties. In an age of streaming and digital ubiquity, we caught up with them backstage at AAC to see how the radio influenced them and get their take on their newfound success.

Do you have an early memory of radio, do you even remember terrestrial radio?
Christopher “Xelan” Bernard: Dude, I listened to radio when I was a kid. Yeah, I remember all the emo dance and pop punk bands that I have grown to love today. Atlanta’s alternative 99X. That was my station!
Donald Bryant: Yeah, this guy been on the station.
Eric Dangerfield: He is the only one of us born in the 1900s.
Eric Dangerfield: I think I remember, like, oh, Dear Maria, I think it was the first, like, alternative song I remember ever hearing on the radio. I was in kindergarten,
What was it like touring with Third Eye Blind?
Eric Dangerfield: That was absolutely insane. Like I said, because we did the first show and then I was like, cool. And I was like, oh, like, we have like four more. Yeah, they are like really cool guys. Really talented to watch. Yellowcard as well, like really good.
You guys fit right in on the bill this year.
Percy Crews: I even remember being in my room, jamming out to “Semi-Charmed [Life].” And now, we’re here playing shows with them. It’s like, what in the world?
