TRAP GIRL | HEX CODE | SPARE PART FOR BROKEN HEARTS

LOS ANGELES, CA- In the vibrant heart of Los Angeles’ music scene, I recently had the privilege of attending two electrifying performances by Girl in a Coma. These shows were not only a testament to the band’s enduring appeal but also a showcase for some of LA’s most dynamic emerging talents. At the Paramount, the stage was ignited by the raw energy of Trap Girl, while at Alex’s Bar, the audience was treated to the eclectic sounds of Hex Code and the emotive resonance of Spare Parts for Broken Hearts.

Each of these opening acts brought a unique flavor to the evening, enriching the overall experience with their distinct musical styles and compelling performances. Their contributions underscored the depth and diversity of Los Angeles’ underground music scene, leaving an indelible impression on all in attendance.

Trap Girl: Defying Norms with Unapologetic Punk

Formed in 2014, Trap Girl has been a formidable force in LA’s punk landscape. Fronted by the indomitable Drew Arriola-Sands, the band is known for its fierce blend of old-school punk infused with a riot-grrrl edge. Their aesthetic—glamorous yet gritty—serves as a visual and auditory assault on societal norms, challenging conventions with every chord.

During their set at the Paramount, Trap Girl delivered a performance that was nothing short of incendiary. Arriola-Sands’ commanding presence, accentuated by her big hair and black laced ensemble, captivated the audience from the outset. The band’s synergy was palpable, with each member contributing to a wall of sound that was both cohesive and chaotic. Their setlist seemed to cover their entire repertoire, featuring songs from their 2017 debut album, to tracks from their latest album, The Savage Goddess, but whether it was “Trapped For Life” (from the debut) or “Baddest Bitch” from their most one, each song resonated with themes of empowerment and defiance, offering listeners a visceral experience that transcended the typical punk performance.

What sets Trap Girl apart is their unwavering commitment to authenticity and advocacy. Their music serves as a manifesto against societal constraints, particularly those imposed on marginalized communities. By confronting issues head-on through their art, Trap Girl not only entertains but also educates, fostering a sense of solidarity and resistance among their listeners.

Hex Code: A Modern Take on Dance Punk

Based on what I could glean from the interwebs, Hex Code emerged from the creative crucible of Long Beach, offering a fresh perspective on the dance-punk genre. As they have described themselves, they draw inspiration from early L.A. death rock and post-punk influences, the band crafts a sound that is both nostalgic and forward-thinking. Their lineup features Mary Animaux and Veronica Cruz sharing vocal duties, with Redd on drums and Lily Stretz on bass, creating a dynamic and multifaceted sonic experience.

At Alex’s Bar, Hex Code’s performance was a kinetic explosion of rhythm and melody. Their setlist, featuring tracks like “Parasite” and “Walk into It,” showcased their ability to blend haunting organ tones with driving guitar riffs, and reminiscent of… at least to me… the pioneering sounds of Kathleen Hanna. Think of Le Tigre if Le Tigre went down a darker road. That’s what my gut was telling me… and my gut was digging it. The dual vocals of Animaux and Cruz added depth and texture. I was entranced, and so was the audience, as bodies in the room bopped around in unison to the infectious grooves that Hex Code delivered with a fiery passion.

Hex Code’s artistry lies in their seamless fusion of past and present, paying homage to their musical forebears while carving out their own distinct identity. Their music invites listeners to both reflect and revel, offering a danceable yet introspective journey that lingers long after the final note.

Spare Parts for Broken Hearts: Emotional Resonance in Overdrive

As a band that has been close to my heart since I first covered them for Blurred Culture, Spare Parts for Broken Hearts has continually evolved, refining their sound and stage presence. The current trio—Sarah Green on vocals and guitar, Austin on bass, and Forrest on drums—has developed a chemistry that is both evident and electrifying.

Their performance at Alex’s Bar was a testament to this growth. The set was imbued with a heightened energy, with tempos slightly accelerated, infusing their melancholic melodies with a newfound urgency. Green’s vocals soared with emotive intensity, while Austin and Forrest provided a rhythmic foundation that was both solid and dynamic. The interplay between the members created a rich tapestry of sound, enveloping the audience in waves of sonic emotion.

This particular performance, in my eyes, stood out as a pinnacle moment for the band. The subtle adjustments in tempo and the palpable camaraderie on stage suggested a band that has grown out of its growing pains, and truly found its groove. Their music, characterized by its blend of grunge and alternative rock elements, resonated deeply, offering a cathartic experience that left a lasting impact. Hell… as long as “Ever” is in their setlist, you can count me in as a happy customer.

In conclusion, these performances highlighted the vibrant and diverse tapestry of Los Angeles’ music scene. Trap Girl, Hex Code, and Spare Parts for Broken Hearts each brought their unique artistry to the stage, contributing to an unforgettable series of shows that celebrated the power and passion of live music.
