LOS ANGELES, CA- Let’s be honest: for all the hype surrounding *In the Key of Love*, the pre-release singles from Jake Wesley Rogers hadn’t exactly set my soul on fire. “Loser” leaned hard into glam rock, while “God Bless” and “Hot Gospel” played with spiritual symbolism and queer subversion — themes that may resonate deeply with some listeners, particularly within the LGBTQ+ community. As a straight man and staunch ally, I fully recognize that those tracks might carry a different emotional weight for others than they did for me.
But then came “My Misery.”
This one hits different.
There’s a spine-tingling, Queen-adjacent chorale opening, a stomping, anthemic rhythm that nods to classic rock, and a vocal performance from Rogers that doesn’t just perform pain — it exorcises it. “My misery, hope it never leaves / My misery keeps me company” is the kind of line that lives rent-free in your head for days — dramatic, yes, but delivered with such conviction it skips the melodrama and lands straight in the gut.
What truly elevates the song is the “Live From a Lodge” performance. Rogers, behind the piano, stripped of spectacle, lets his voice and songwriting carry the moment — and they do, powerfully. This is the first track from *In the Key of Love* that has made it onto my “Songs I’m Digging” playlist — and honestly, if I could add it twice, I would.
