LOS ANGELES, CA- Hot Chip has always been at the forefront of electronic music. They are one of the few indie electronic acts that utilize a full band approach to the genre. It certainly pays dividends as their sound is veritably fuller and their live performance more energetic than most of their contemporaries.
The only time I’ve seen them perform live was at the Hollywood Bowl. While I was entertained at that concert, I always felt there was something lacking in that performance. At FYF I figured out what that was. Dancing.
The Hollywood Bowl is a seated venue. Even if you wanted to dance, you’d be relatively confined to the space of the seat that you were assigned. At a music festival like FYF, the audience is accorded enough space to swirl around and move as their feet guide them. I watched Hot Chip with two female friends, and they danced throughout the entire set with a reckless abandon, singing along, taking selfies, and Snapchatting.
I’ll admit, whenever I listen to Hot Chip, I always feel like they are playing wrong notes. Their arrangements are filled with moments of pronounced dissonance, and I’m usually anxiously waiting for them to resolve the dissonant. This evening, it didn’t bother me at all. It was probably because I was dancing with my two female friends.
