LOS ANGELES, CA-  I can’t remember exactly how I stumbled upon Florence Road, but I do remember trusting my gut. Something about this young Irish band caught my ear early on… enough that I ordered their debut EP Fall Back on vinyl. Only 500 copies were pressed, and I’m proud to say one of them lives in my collection. From the first spin, I was floored. Fall Back was loud, guitar-heavy, and surprisingly self-assured for a debut. It felt like the kind of record made by a band who already knew who they were and where they wanted to go.

Their new single “Miss,” out now via Warner Records, confirms I wasn’t wrong to bet on them. The track, paired with a live video filmed in a spare bedroom, captures all the raw, volatile energy that made Fall Back such a standout, but with an even sharper edge. It’s a hard-rocking song, full of grit and yearning, but also layered with a musical complexity that keeps pulling you back in for another listen.

The song opens in a simmering haze, vocalist Lily Aron’s voice curling around lines like “Not just when I’m alone / Not just when I haven’t got you except inside my phone.” The loneliness she describes isn’t situational; it’s chronic, ambient, the kind that lingers even when you’re surrounded by noise. There’s a moment in the lyrics (“It’s when I’m having a blast / twirling around in my dress”) that cuts especially deep. That admission, missing someone even in moments of joy, is what makes the song’s ache universal.

Musically, “Miss” plays with structure in a way that feels more intuitive than academic. It caught me off guard in the most wonderful way. The first section seems to sit in 3/4 time, giving it a swaying, off-kilter rhythm that matches the emotional instability of the lyrics. Midway through, there’s a bridge where that waltzing pulse collides with a straight 4/4 groove before the band fully locks into a driving rock rhythm. Maybe I’m wrong….it wouldn’t be the first time (my music theory is terrible), but that tempo switch-up gives the song its sense of escalation, like everything is spilling over its edges before snapping into focus.

John Hill’s production captures that push and pull beautifully. The guitars grind and shimmer, the bass rumbles like an engine, and the drums crash with just the right amount of chaos. Then there’s Aron’s voice: it’s equal parts delicacy and defiance. When she wails, she really wails, in a way that recalls the unrestrained power of early PJ Harvey or Dolores O’Riordan. It’s the kind of performance that makes you stop what you’re doing and just listen.

Lyrically, “Miss” is built around that wordless ache that sits in your chest long after someone’s gone. “I cry over nothing, sum up the contents, wish I could feel you in my hair,” she sings near the end, which is preceded with breathy chants of “I know you want it.” It’s both a plea and a taunt, the sound of someone haunted and haunting at the same time.

For a band still early in their career, Florence Road already sound seasoned. Their songs don’t chase trends…they build on the foundation of rock ’n’ roll itself through their own raw chemistry. Watching them evolve from the rough brilliance of Fall Back to the fully realized confidence of “Miss” feels like witnessing a band come into its power in real time.

I have no idea how old they are, but age almost doesn’t matter here. What counts is that they’re making music that hits with both brains and guts. And if this single is any indication of where they’re headed, Florence Road aren’t just one of Ireland’s next great exports… they are… in my humble opinion… one of the most exciting young rock bands anywhere right now. I can’t wait to buy whatever vinyl they press next.
