A shooting at Donald Trump‘s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania was an attempted assassination of the former president and presumptive Republican nominee, law enforcement officials say.
One attendee was killed and two were critically injured. Trump said on social media that a bullet “pierced the upper part” of his right ear before agents whisked him off stage. The Secret Service said it killed the suspected shooter, who attacked from an elevated position outside the rally venue.
Trump thanked the Secret Service in his message, and on Fox News, Chaffetz praised the individual agents who dove on top of the president as heroes. But he lit up the Secret Service overall for their failure in allowing it to be this close of a call in the first place. “This is a catastrophic failure of the United States Secret Service,” he said. “The men and women who jumped on the former president got in between him and a would-be shooter, they’re heroes.” “But if there was a person with a gun within proximity to take down the president of the United States, those people have got to be held accountable,” Chaffetz continued. “They should be fired!”
