LOS ANGELES, CA- Sometimes, an artist finds you exactly when you’re ready to hear them. For me, that was Elita. I first came across the Newfoundland trio through a press release announcing their debut album, Hell Hill. I clicked play on the Trainspotting-inspired video for “Ego,” and before I knew it, I was submerged — spiraling down a rabbit hole I had no intention of leaving.
Hell Hill is a beautiful, chaotic mess. It’s frenetic, dissonant, often cacophonous — full of sharp turns and clashing notes that by all logic shouldn’t coexist, but somehow create a hypnotically listenable whole. Recorded in abandoned houses, karaoke bars, and even a haunted 1800s stockade-themed escape room in Newfoundland, the album feels less like a polished studio project and more like a transmission from another dimension.

What holds the frayed edges together is Elita herself. Her voice — soft, almost spectral — drifts over the industrial noise and glitchy electro-pulse like a phantom guide. In a landscape of sonic wreckage, her calm, subdued tone becomes the thread you cling to. The press release compared their sound to artists like Crystal Castles and Grouper, and those references track, but Elita carves a space that feels unmistakably their own.
Without realizing it, I had let the entire 45 minutes and 23 seconds of Hell Hill (Spotify) wash over me. And before the final track even finished echoing out, I found myself hitting play again. The album lingers — in the air, in the blood.
I haven’t yet ventured into Elita’s earlier catalog — the EPs Sick Girl, Blood Sucker, Anxiety Angel, or 2023’s Dysania — but after the raw, ghostly pull of Hell Hill, I’m more than intrigued. If this is Elita’s debut, the haunted corners they have yet to explore promise even stranger — and more intoxicating — territory ahead.
