SPICEWOOD, TX- Let’s start by getting this out of the way—I am a massive Aly & AJ fan. I’m their exact demographic. I watched Cow Belles, memorized every music video, and still belt out “Potential Breakup Song” on my commute like I’m 17 again. Over the years, I’ve kept up with their post-Disney output. While nothing quite hits like those early bangers, I’ve still loved watching them evolve—and yes, I can always tell when AJ voices a cartoon character. So if you’re expecting an impartial review, this isn’t it. This is the perspective of a fan who’s grown up alongside them.

That’s part of what made seeing them at Luck Reunion so meaningful. This wasn’t a nostalgic set built to chase past hits. It was something deeper—rooted in maturity, personal storytelling, and their newest chapter as Americana artists. Aly & AJ have traded bubblegum hooks for subtle arrangements and acoustic honesty, and their Luck Reunion set leaned all the way into that evolution.

They opened with the tender title track from their new album Silver Deliverer. The arrangement let their voices shine. Aly’s tone has aged like soft leather—warm and worn-in—while AJ’s raspy timbre has grown wider in range and expressive power. Their harmonies have always been the magic, but in this more roots-driven style, they shine brighter than ever.

The set leaned heavily into Silver Deliverer, their new full-length album released May 3 via Aly & AJ Music. Produced by Jonathan Wilson (Father John Misty, Angel Olsen), the album is a Laurel Canyon-tinged collection of folk-pop, indie rock, and country-infused storytelling and marks a significant departure from their earlier pop-centric work. Embracing a Laurel Canyon-inspired sound, the album delves into themes of sisterhood, personal growth, and self-discovery. Tracks like “Next to Nothing” and “If You Get Lonely” showcase their signature harmonies against a backdrop of indie folk-rock instrumentation. The song “Michael” stands out as a poignant tribute to their late friend and advisor, Michael Oppenheim, reflecting on grief and resilience .

I had the chance to catch Aly & AJ earlier in the week at Empire Garage during SXSW, where they performed an acoustic set in support of Artist For Action and Sandy Hook Promise. That night was intimate and heavy—with the sisters even sharing their own experience of being caught in the crossfire of a Sacramento shooting while on tour. Their vulnerability on stage was palpable, especially as they introduced their song “Sirens,” written in the wake of that traumatic event. That acoustic performance felt like a preview of where their music was heading—and Luck Reunion felt like the full unveiling.

At Luck Reunion, I was thrilled to see that Aly & AJ did make space for some of their most beloved songs, closing their set with a triumphant performance of “Potential Breakup Song” that sent the crowd into full singalong mode. Sure, parts of the set leaned into their newer, more introspective material, and I noticed a few attendees unsure of what to expect. But personally? I wasn’t disappointed. Aly & AJ have always had the talent. Now, they have the perspective—and they deserve the space to grow, even as they honor the songs that first made us fall in love with them.

They gave their fans permission to grow up, have babies, change careers, and evolve. With Silver Deliverer, they’re just asking for the same.

In support of Silver Deliverer, Aly & AJ have announced a North American tour, set to begin on September 19 in Los Angeles and conclude on November 9 in Santa Barbara. The tour, featuring acclaimed singer-songwriter Amanda Shires, promises to bring their new material to life on stage.
