LOS ANGELES, CA-  Back in 2017, Blurred Culture got a taste of some of the new music that Zella Day was working on at the Moroccan Lounge. One of those songs performed on that night was the amazingly moody “People Are Strangers” which got a proper release at the end of April with a sultry video that enhances the song’s dreamy spirit.

“People Are Strangers” is part of Zella’s forthcoming EP Where Does The Devil Hide, and really seems to evoke a  real femme-fatale type aura. If this foreshadowing what we can expect from the rest of the album, I think we’ll be witnesses to real growth in Zella’s musicality and style. Of the EP, Zella has said:

“The making of the EP was a creatively liberating experience. Nothing mattered more to us than capturing the music in its most honest form both from an arrangement and production standpoint […] it was an incredible exercise in trusting my instincts. “Where Does The Devil Hide” is by far my most self realized work, it is the emergence of my evolution and arrival.”

Zella’s lyrics are particularly mature, as they feel far more inward-looking than her prior hits. Where Zella plays the storyteller in a song like “Hypnotic”, she focuses more on introspective notions in “People Are Strangers” like, for example, the notion of trust. As she wistfully sings the lyrics “They tell you that they’ll never tell you a lie/ Put you in a spell to get you on their side/ They’re trying to hide, but they’re crossing the line/ And it’s bad behavior/ People are strangers/ I’m getting stranger/ The moment they want to get closer/ I push them further”, she delves into thoughts that we know she’s personally mulled over.

Where Does The Devil Hide was produced by The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach. It will mark her debut release in partnership with Easy Eye Sound / Concord Records. We can’t wait to check it out.
