There’s a crowded field of singers in the electronic pop genre, but cream typically rises to the top, and those with the chops- and a little bit of luck- usually break through and hit the right demographic to have a successful career. ROZES seems to have a mix of the right stuff to make this happen.
We’ve said this before when we posted about the latest music video to her collaboration with Cash Cash, “Matches”, but if you are a fan of the EDM genre, then the odds are good you’ve heard ROZES’ voice before. She’s been featured on a plethora of club bangers including The Chainsmoker’s “Roses”, Big Gigantic’s “All of Me” and Louis Fulton’s “Wasted On You”.
We asked ROZES if she could hang out with us at SXSW, and to our delight, she obliged.

How did you get your start in the music industry?
I started by just putting my music out on SoundCloud and kind of created my own EP, writing my own music. It ended up getting found by The Chainsmokers, and things kind of just took off into the industry so fast.
So that Chainsmokers single, “Roses”, was your first major release?
I would say so. I did have a release a song with Australia’s Just a Gent called “Limelight”, but “Roses” but it was my first big US release. They found “Limelight” on SoundCloud, found me on Twitter, messaged me and said they wanted to write with me. I think that I’ve learned that the music industry is a mixture of chance and people you meet.
Wow. That’s pretty amazing … AND pretty lucky. Are you normally a lucky person?
(Laughs)
I actually am. I have to admit, I am a lucky person. Even growing up, I used to not study for tests and somehow get straight A’s. I’m no genius, so I don’t know how that happened.
(Bashful laughter)
I’m just a lucky person, I guess. What happened was I was playing my hometown’s “Amp Radio Let it Snow” show at our hometown arena in Philadelphia, and I met them there. We just started talking and I said I have this song that would be awesome for them to produce.
Do you want to chalk it up to karma?
I don’t know. Maybe. Maybe it was just something that some higher power had for me. I hate saying this, but part of the music industry is luck. It’s a mixture of really hard work and the last 10% is luck I’d say.
What is the songwriting process like for you? That hook in “Matches” is banging. Do you pull from past experience, current experience?
Yeah definitely. It varies every time. I do always pull from real life experience.
So “Matches” is about…
(Coy laughter)
It’s about a real life experience with an ex-boyfriend from high school. That’s what I like to do. I like to talk about things that are honest so I can actually provide real emotions. Every time I sing a song I go through those emotions that I once felt and that’s a journey that I go through personally I guess.
What’s on the horizon? Anything new you’re working on right now or would like to work on?
I’m putting out another single next month (April), and playing Firefly Music Festival in June. I’m excited for that. I’m always down to work on new projects and connect with new music makers. I’ve got a couple of artists on my wishlist. Calvin Harris or Diplo … that’d be amazing. If my luck comes through. Maybe. The future is bright.
