Why I Wanted To See Kitten: Kitten had been on my radar for a while (started listening to their music since their 2016 EP Heaven of Somewhere In Between), but, I always figured that I’d get the chance to hit up one of their local shows in Los Angeles as that’s where they are currently based.
As it turns out, because photographers were escorted out of the venue between acts during Keith Urban’s concert at Stubb’s, I decided that just hanging out outside of Stubb’s wasn’t a good use of my time, so I decided to walk next door to catch Kitten perform in Austin.
What I Thought Of Kitten’s Performance: I was almost glad that Keith Urban’s management wouldn’t let me watch his entire SXSW performance, otherwise I would have never have gotten to experience the force of nature that is Chloe Chaidez, Kitten’s front-woman.
Performing at SXSW to preview their new EP Pink Champagne (that was just released on June 1st), Kitten delivered a energy filled set to a packed venue. Their new wave/indie pop sonics were were tight and infectious, inducing feet to shuffle and heads to nod to the beat.
The music notwithstanding, a lot of the band’s spirit came from Chloe. Don’t let her petite frame fool you, this one’s energy is boundless. Her body was dancing non-stop throughout the performance and had me working up sweat just watching her perform. When she wasn’t passionately singing out lyrics or literally flying into the air from monitors, she was reveling in the opportunity to perform for a new crowd. So excited was she, she stopped mid way during the performance to Facetime her father, a former drummer in LA’s early punk scene, to share in her excitement.
It was an endearing act that revealed another side to Chloe’s badass stage persona, and something that I hope to catch again real soon.
