RECAP: Veronica Maggio. Americans may not know her name … but she’s kind of a big deal in her native Sweden. A very big deal.
This Swedish soul-pop singer released her debut album in 2006, and has be scoring hit after hit, and winning award after award, overseas. Apparently, her performance at Stockholm, CA was her first ever American concert, and boy … she was impressive.
Her music is sung in Swedish, but even the language barrier couldn’t prevent me from falling in love with her light and lovely voice, and the emotions that she espoused on stage. Critics have hailed her as the Swedish alternative to Amy Winehouse, but I think that that comparison is rooted more in the sonics of her musical arrangements, than in her voice. Pure and crisp, her voice is more youthful and virginal than that of Ms. Winehouse’s, and I can’t wait until she cuts an english track so I can fall in love with not only her sonics, but her message.
