Opening for Kaleo at The Fonda was a duo from Austin, Texas, The Wind + The Wave. Dwight “The Wind” Baker and Patricia “The Wave” Lynn played a short, yet solid, set for the incoming Fonda Crowd.
What was evident while listening to this band perform is that the foundation of this group’s music lies in the plainspoken, heartfelt lyrics that Ms. Lynn sings. Their county and folk infused Americana lends itself to letting every word that is sung be heard and resonate with the those paying attention. From knee slappers to bluesy ballads, this band was able to smoothly guide the audience on a sonic journey filled with relatable emotions ranging from raucous joy to hopeful optimism despite despair from one song to the next.
Their performance, and the tales that they told through song, definitely intrigued me, and I have bookmarked their latest album released earlier this year, “Happiness Is Not A Place”, as an album to listen to in its sequential entirety as my gut is telling me that that album should tell an even greater story that would put each of the songs that I heard that night in context.
