LUCK, TX- For most of our SXSW and Luck Reunion artist coverage, we’ll keep it relatively short and sweet. Why I Wanted To See Texas Gentlemen: If there’s a modern day equivalent of The Wrecking Crew, it’s The Texas Gentlemen … at least that what a friend told me when he noticed that I didn’t have them pencilled in on my Luck Reunion schedule.
I’m almost ashamed to admit it, but after I did a little research, I discovered that this collection of musicians have worked with a who’s who in the country, blues, folk, Americana genres, recording as studio musicians for artists like Nikki Lane and Leon Bridges, in addition to backing up the likes of Ed Sheeran and George Strait. Plus, if the city of Dallas deemed them the Best Group Act (in 2016), then these gentlemen know how to put on a show.
What I Thought Of Texas Gentlemen’s Performance: Their performance at Luck Reunion was not what I expected. It was better.
Not only did they put on one hell of a show as an ensemble, ripping out classic rock sonics evoking the spirit of the The Band, they also treated the crowd with a slew of special surprise guests. Billed as “Gents And Dames” the day of the festival (the schedule was updated the day of the festival on the app to give attendees as sense of surprise), the performance had Erika Wennerstrom (who had performed earlier in the day), Australian powerhouse vocalist Ruby Boots, the rich voiced Nicole Atkins and the rising superstar Lauren Ruth Ward join them on stage to sing solos and as an ensemble.
Nicole Atkin’s cover of “Stand By Your Man” was particularly amazing, and watching the whole group perform “Bondurant Women” for the first time ever (I believe) was truly something special.
The Texas Gentlemen could have easily entertained the crowd all by their lonesome, but like all of the rest of the Luck Reunion performances, they gave a little something extra, and had us all hoping the music and joy wouldn’t end.
