AUSTIN, TX- For most of our SXSW artist coverage, we’ll keep it relatively short and sweet. We have over 80 artists to cover, so cut us some slack! 😉 We’ll basically be formatting each post into two parts: (1) Why our contributor wanted to see this act and (2) what our contributor thought of the performance. Why I Wanted To See Noah Cyrus: When your dad has sold over 10,000,000 records (Billy Ray), and your sister has an equally prolific musical career in addition to being one of top influencers in the world (Miley), there’s a lot to live up to. At the age of 18, Noah Cyrus is starting her own climb up the ladder. Since releasing her first single in 2017, “Make Me (Cry)” (the video for which has over 100,000,000 views), she’s been steadily releasing banger after pop banger. Catching her perform at one of her many SXSW showcase gigs was a no brainer.
What I Thought Of Noah Cyrus’ Performance: As was anticipated, the venue at Pelons for Vevo’s artist showcase was pretty packed. Standing high above the crowd on the a stage perched at least 10 feet in the air, Noah performed a relatively short set (no more than 6 or 7 songs), but she kept the audience happy by singing all of her popular hits. She even performed for the first time her latest single “We Are Fucked” (although MØ wasn’t there to join her).
Like her family members, Noah demonstrated a confidence and flare on stage. I thought she did a solid job at communicating her charisma to the audience, however I got the impression that perhaps her excitement may have made her a little pitchy here and there. If my memory serves me right, I thought that the weakest part of her performance was when she performed a cover (unfortunately, I omitted the title of the song in my notes although I think it may have been BØRNS’ “Electric Love”). I think that’s something she’ll grow out of. After all, she’s still really young, and something like breath support and diaphragm control takes years to really master.
With a new album that’s supposed to come out later this year, I’m sure that Noah will doing even more touring in support of it. I have no doubt that, with more songs in her repertoire, she’ll be entertaining her fans around the country and climbing even higher up that ladder.
