San Bernardino, CA- When it was announced that Slipknot would not be featured at this year’s installment of Ozzfest Meets Knotfest I could sense a collective, “Huh?” resonate throughout the metal-verse. After all, they were the band that founded and curated Knotfest since its inception. And although Stone Sour, which is fronted by Slipknot’s Corey Taylor, would be featured in the line-up, I could see some of the backlash on social media from the substitution. Would a Knotfest really be a Knotfest without Slipknot?
In chatting with a handful of festival attendees throughout the weekend (some of whom came wearing their own Slipknot headgear), I could hear that there were still some hard feelings and confusion that Slipknot wouldn’t be taking the stage that weekend, but they all said that Corey Taylor always brings it, and that they’d still be rocking out to Stone Sour.
Stone Sour, while sharing Sklipknot’s vocalist and a handful of former members, is much more melodic in nature. Sure, they aren’t as heavy or as aggressive as Slipknot, and won’t necessarily cater to hardcore Slipknot fans (as the beer thrown on stage during the performance would indicate), but they still rock pretty damn hard and know how to command a huge stage in front of the masses.
Having released their sixth studio album (the Loudwire Music Awards winning “Hydograd”) earlier this year- a massive hour plus long album- their set featured a handful of selections from the new repertoire. But I feel that they made a conscious effort to pack their performance with a ton of their hit songs to appease any other of those who were hesitant with their appearance in the line-up. “Get Inside”, “Made of Scars, “Say You’ll Haunt Me”, “30/30-150”, “Through Glass” … these are some critical and fan favorites, and when your setlist consists of basically a “greatest hits” seelction, you’re going to have a lot more people singing along that sitting there in disdain.
Corey Taylor is as charismatic a front man as any, and he and Stone Sour had the venue rocking throughout the solid ten song set.
