When Springtime Carnivore took to The State Theater stage, their front woman Greta Morgan introduced the band explaining, “We booked an Airbnb and once we arrived we realized it was in a cemetery.” Welcome to Ithaca, Springtime Carnivore!

Greta Morgan certainly does it all: piano, bass, vocals, drums. She started her career in music by anonymously posting her songs on the Internet to gather reactions. Apparently, her music must have impressed a few ears as she’s opening for The Head and The Heart.

Springtime Carnivore is hip. Beyond the flared pants and patterned shirts, their music has a fresh sound. They describe their music as “Technicolor Daydream Pop”, and with their own twist on the psychedelic pop genre, their music is relaxing and thought provoking. It made me think and imagine the future. My imagination expanded… what’s next, hallucinations?

Ms. Morgan would make a great comedian. Her banter between songs made me laugh very hard. Everyone else in venue was laughing with me, so I knew that she truly had an appealing sense of humor. From explaining her grandmother’s confusion about the band’s name (it’s “Carnivore” NOT “Carnival”) to questioning the existence of a local grease injected pizza place called Pudgey’s, I couldn’t help but fall for her charming demeanor … and hallucinate about pizza.

Watching them perform was inspiring. I have never seen a band with such genuine happiness to perform. I felt something beyond the smiles and laughs on stage. The happiness was simple, genuine and contagious. Jamming to their most popular songs “Name on a Matchbook” and “Collectors”, Ms. Morgan’s youthful voice soothed and entertained the crowd.

If you ever want to hallucinate about pizza, enjoy unique music, or truly feel happy… go checkout Springtime Carnivore.
