RECAP: The first band we were able to catch at Music Tastes Good was the New York based band The Sound of Urchin. I’m grateful that I did, as it would turn out to be one of the more poignant performances of the weekend.

I’ll be honest, I knew little about the band before catching them on stage on Friday. I wasn’t familiar with the songs that they rocked out to, but I could tell why they were invited to play the main stage of the festival. As evidenced by the perpetual smile on Tomato 11’s (aka Chris Hafenist) when he wasn’t growling out lyrics to songs behind the drum kit, this band played their hard rock/heavy metal/punk jams with the kind of youthful exuberance that surely endears and attracts other musicians to them.

Towards the end of their set, they invited Music Tastes Good founder, Josh Fischel to rock out with them and they powered through an inspired cover of Rush’s “Tom Sawyer”, skillfully executing the complex arrangement to demonstrate just how skilled they were as musicians. Tons of fun, and a perfect way  for me to have started the festival experience. I’m sure Josh would have agreed.
